How to Reduce Self-Critical Thoughts with Self-Compassion

As adults, I find that it’s our own self-critical thoughts that prevent us from living the life we want.

Have you ever said any of the following things to yourself?

I’m not good enough” “I’ll look silly in front of others” or “I’m always screwing up

The bad news about this is that we tend to be one of our own biggest barriers to achieving our goals and living a fulfilling life. The good news about this is, because this obstacle comes from us, we have the greatest control over changing that!  

I believe that rather than beating ourselves up, we would be better off using self-compassion!

“What does self-compassion even mean?” you may ask…

Self-compassion is the ability to recognize suffering within ourselves and to approach that suffering with the intention to alleviate it. We alleviate that suffering through kindness, understanding, and self-soothing behaviors.

Now I know a lot people that say “It helps motivate me when I’m harsh on myself” or “These things are true about myself.

Listen up…I want you to think about self-critical thoughts like being a harsh coach. The harsh coach puts down his or her players and yells at them, believing that it will do them good. As a matter of fact, people with a harsh coach in sports usually report quitting or feeling worse after their coaches “pep talk.”

A good goal to have would be to become your own compassionate coach through self-compassion!
